Gift guide to help your game

The festive season is very much upon us and when looking for the perfect gift for the golfer in your life I recommend something that will really help improve their game. Here are my top 5 gift ideas this holiday season:

1. Putting Mirror (approx. £40) – By far one of the most effective and helpful training aids I have seen. Laid on the ground, this device looks back up at the golfer, reflecting head position, posture, alignments and much more. The instant feedback it gives is brilliant and especially useful during the winter months as it can just as easily be used on the carpet in the spare room as the practice putting green. I predict huge improvements in scoring to any lucky recipients.

2. Laser Range Finder (approx. £220) – Point and shoot; this helpful device allows you to measure the distance to certain targets or hazards with amazing accuracy. A great advantage when playing a course for the first time and adds confidence to club selection and shot commitment. Very lightweight and waterproof. May seem expensive but soon pays for itself.

3. Sunglasses (£60 – £150) – May seem obvious but investing in some good sunglasses can help immensely when the summer rolls around. And before you say “I can’t play in sunglasses,” the modern styles are so fitted and lightweight that I defy anyone to even notice they are wearing them after a few holes. Still not convinced? Just take a look around at the professional players on TV, and you’ll see just how popular they have become.

4. Golf Grips (approx. £15) – Don’t be the golfer with old, battered and even incorrectly fitted grips on your clubs. The grip should complement the hand size and make holding the club easy and comfortable – anything else will hinder your potential. With new styles are being unveiled every year, there is a grip out there to suit everyone’s needs.

5. Golf Lessons (£65 upwards) – Throwing money on equipment and gimmicks can be one way of improving, but it’s a short fix. Instead of buying that new £250 driver, swap for a 5 lesson package at the Golf Academy and I guarantee your golf will improve more from instruction. Fear not, instruction doesn’t mean a complete overhaul of your game; a good coach will always work with the strongest aspects of your golf, look to make improvements you’re comfortable with and that will address the areas that you feel need attention.
